Canned Cocktail Review: Fling Mai Tai

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Fling canned cocktail Mai Tai reviewed by The Pursuit of Cocktails

My first ever canned Mai Tai

Hi cocktail babes! Sorry this post is a little later going out than normal. I've had a pretty crazy week launching my brand new invention, the Swizzly™ (pictured above on the can) and just as I was sitting down to write this review a sweet friend showed up with flowers and a nice bottle of champagne to celebrate. How nice was that?!!?

Now I'm back at my computer and I've made myself some iced coffee (no booze, I promise) so I'm ready to tell you all about this Mai Tai from Fling.

I've been eyeing the Fling cocktails for probably two years. Their branding is one of my very favorites. I love how each cocktail has it's own color and illustrations that fit the vibe of the cocktail. Each can is so fun and the whole vibe just pulls me in. If this was a branding review, I'd give Fling a 10/10. Plus Fling is from Missouri. I'm from Missouri. So they get bonus points right off the bat.

I decided to pick up their Mai Tai because I haven't had a canned cocktail Mai Tai yet in all my reviews. Let's dig in and see how it stacks up.

Here is my official review of the Fling Mai Tai:

3 out of 5 cocktail shakers

I really really wanted to like this cocktail for all the reasons I stated above - but I just didn't. This cocktail was pretty neutral for me. It wasn't the worst I've ever had but it wasn't anything to write home about either.

The flavor was very tart in a citrusy way but I couldn't quite put my finger on whether it was lime, lemon, orange, or what. It seem to just be a combination of all citrus flavors making it totally unidentifiable. I didn't actually taste the rum which in some ways is great. At least it didn't have the gross alcohol kick back that some of the super cheap canned cocktails like the Monaco Cocktails have. But it also didn't have a quality rum flavor. I guess I've been spoiled by all the amazing craft cocktails I've tried lately that have super high end liquor where you can taste difference.

Overall, this was just okay. I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it but I probably won't be having another Fling Mai Tai.

Sweetness

2 out of 4 cocktail shakers
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This canned Mai Tai was not particularly sweet. It was more tart than anything else. There may have been a hint of sweetness from the rum but I didn't pick up on it directly.

Booziness

One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 8% ABV so it's got a pretty good kick to it. I didn't actually drink that much of it so I can't speak to how much of a buzz it had. I do think it would be pretty easy to drink the whole can without realizing that it is 8% since it doesn't have a strong liquor taste. I just couldn't get excited about drinking it beyond a few sips so I decided to save my calories for ice cream instead last night.

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

I probably would not buy the Mai Tai BUT I'm not ready to rule out the Fling cocktails all together.

As I've done more of these reviews I've had an opportunity to try many cocktails within one line and often there is one or two that I really love and one that wasn't really for me. So don't want to judge an entire brand by one cocktail in case I just happened to pick the weakest link for my initial taste.

Fling has a lot of cocktails in it's line so I will definitely try a few others before I make up my mind about the brand. Here is the full line up from Fling:

  • Gin & tonic
  • Mojito
  • Margarita
  • Blood orange vodka soda - this is the one I really want to try next
  • Mai Tai
  • Whiskey mule - and this one!!
  • Bourbon smash - and obviously this one because I can't get enough whiskey!

I used one of the Swizzlys from my limited edition Palm Springs Collection for this review.

If you haven't heard about my Swizzly yet, it is one part drink marker + one part cocktail stick and the whole thing is served up in a set of six inside a reuseable + recyclable champagne flute. The Swizzly for cans let's you FINALLY add garnish to your canned drinks all while adding a little flair as well.
