Canned Cocktail Review: Flying Embers Lemon Orchard Hard Kombucha

Flying Embers Hard Kombucha review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Team Kombucha!

Kombucha is one of those things that people seem to either love or hate. In my girl gang it's about 80-20 with 20% of us loving kombucha. I love the stuff. I have at least one bottle of my favorite regular kombucha in my fridge at all times. It's my go to anytime I have a headache or I'm feeling a little crabby. Kombucha is my extra special treat. So I'm sure it's not surprise that I also dig hard kombucha.

Luckily, I'm starting to see more hard kombucha pop up in stores. I spotted this Lemon Orchard flavor from Flying Embers on my last trip to Total Wine and I knew I had to pick it up. I tried the Wild Tonic hard kombucha last year (read my reviews here and here) really liked it so let's see how this one from Flying Embers stacks up.

Here is my official review of Flying Embers Lemon Orchard Hard Kombucha:

Four cocktail shakers

If you've tried kombucha before - regular or the boozy version - and didn't like the "wang" to it, I think you'd still like this one from Flying Embers. This is a very drinkable kombucha. It is light and lemony without that over powering kombucha-ness that some others have. I think if you didn't expressly know that this was kombucha, you could easily believe it was an all natural lemonade. And a boozy one at that!

I am loving this canned cocktail from Flying Embers. The only reason I didn't give it 5 cocktail shakers is because I like my cocktails a little stronger with a little more flavor. BUT I was reading about their Black Cherry hard kombucha which has a higher alcohol content and I *cannot wait* to try that one next!

Sweetness

one cocktail shaker
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This is not a sweet cocktail. It actually has zero sugar in it. While I do typically love a sweet cocktail, I don't miss the sweetness in this one at all. This canned cocktail has such a lovely - and that's not a word I use often - lemon quality to it that I didn't give a thought to the sweetness level until I went to write my review. This hard kombucha is perfectly balanced in my book.

Booziness

Three cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 4.5% ABV which is similar to a light beer. Flying Embers does have a higher alcohol line that is 7.2% ABV. I haven't tried that one yet but I have my eye out for it. Especially the Black Cherry!

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

Yes, I definitely want to try a few of the other Flying Embers flavors - Ancient Berry, Ginger & Oak, Grapefruit Thyme, Black Cherry, or Pineapple Chili, and the 7.2% version.

I love regular kombucha and hard kombucha makes my little cocktail-loving heart so happy. The Flying Embers hard kombucha is my new favorite and I can't wait to try more!

    • I love this hard Kombucha, but I’m scared of the cans as I was putting some ice into a cooler bag with the Flying Embers cans already in the bag when it exploded and burst open! I almost got really hurt as it exploded near my face. So, I’m a bit scared to drink it.
Thank you. Maybe put it in different containers where they cannot burst open? Thanks!

    • Sorry guys – everything looked great until I tasted the artificial sweetener – it made me look at the ingredients and I learned a new word: Erythritol.

    • I love kombucha also and love hard kombucha even more. I get to pretend that I’m drinking something that’s good for me while drinking. I’m going to go look for this one ASAP.
      Thanks Jamie!
