Canned Cocktail Review: FTB Gin Fizz & Kamikaze

FTB canned cocktail review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Happy Friday cocktail lovers! This week I'm trying a vodka cocktail and a gin cocktail from FTB (which stand for From The Bar.) The team over at FTB was sweet enough to send me a few of their cocktails along with a super cute tee and some other brand swag. They currently have two ready-to-drink canned cocktails, a Kamikaze and a Gin Fizz.

Right from the moment I got these, I haven't been sure what to expect from the FTB cocktails. After 150+ reviews I can usually glean some type of an idea from looking at the labels and overall branding. In this case all the basic information is there but the design is a little boring and the label are just not giving me any clues. They have been a mystery to me for months as I've been waiting for them to come up next in my cocktail review queue. I just can't get a read on them which means there is only one thing left to do, try it!

Here is my official review of the FTB canned cocktails:

4 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Both of these cocktails are made with real liquor which you know is a winner in my book so they are starting out ahead already. And as soon as I popped the tops on these I could smell the fresh citrus. Also a win. And those first sips did not disappoint either!
The FTB cocktails are refreshing, real, and on par with the best ready-to-drink cocktails I've tried. If I had a graphic for 4.5 / 5 stars I would give it to them. The cocktails are on point!
The only negative I see here is the branding - and this is coming from a former professional marketer's heart  - I think the can design does not due justice to the amazingness that is inside. I'm afraid that people might pass it up on the shelf and miss out. These cocktails are poppin' and I'd love to see them have a can that is just as poppin'.
Here are my thoughts on each cocktail individually:
FTB Kamikaze: Maybe I'm show my roots here but the only drink I associate with a kamikaze is the shot. It was a favorite in my group of friends in college. Those probably were not made very well but this kamikazi from FTB definitely is. And it tastes exactly like the shots I remember - but the flavors are balanced a lot better. I think our shot were probably mostly vodka. This ready-to-drink kamikaze is tart, refreshing, boozy. I like it and I can't stop thinking that it would be perfect to use as a ready-to-drink shot. Just pop this can open and pour it into shot glasses. No shaker or measuring necessary.
FTB Gin Fizz: I have recently been really enjoying a good gin fizz. It has become one of my go-to drinks at my local cocktail bar and I have to say the FTB gin fizz is spot on! It is exactly like the fancy one's I pay $15 for. It's fizzy with a perfect, freshly made lemonade taste and enough booze to know you are having an adult beverage. The FTB gin fizz is perfection!

Sweetness

1 out of 5 cocktail shakers
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

Neither of these FTB canned cocktails were particularly sweet. They were both pretty tart with just enough sweetness to take the edge off. 
 

Booziness

4 out of 5 cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos

The FTB canned cocktails each officially ring in at 12% ABV which is pretty boozy. And each can is a double packing two cocktails per can. So if you have the whole can - that's a pretty strong cocktail. 

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

I really like that gin fizz! I would buy these again and I definitely wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to a friend.

Currently the FTB ready-to-drink cocktail are only available in Indiana - so the rest of us are out of luck for now unfortunately. But I know they are working hard on expanding their distribution.
