Cocktail Mix Review:
Owen's Craft Mixers (Part 1)

Owen's Craft Mixers review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

A fresh kick in the glass

If you follow my stories on Instagram then you probably saw me unbox these mixers from Owen's Craft Mixers. Not only were they sweet enough to send me a bottle of each of the mixes, they also included a recipe card and some swag. Right off the bat I feel in love with their little donkey whom I'm guessing is Owen. I grew up in the Midwest and anything with a hint of farm life has my heart. Even better, you know I love a good pun and the bottle tops say "A fresh kick in the glass." which is just too good! A double pun!! Glass = ass. Kick because of the donkey. I die!

Anywho, for these reviews I tasted just the mix and also made a cocktail using one Owen's recipes which are generally 3 parts mix to 1 part liquor. The Owen's Craft Mixers are available in two sizes. For my reviews I'm using their smaller 8.5 oz bottles which are typically sold in a 4 pack. I found that one bottle of this size makes approximately 2 cocktails with a little mix left over which gives you room to customize your liquor to mixer ratio which is nice. Owen's also has a larger bottle available that is the size of normal mixer bottles. I love that there are two options. I hate opening one of those bigger bottles of mixers only to use half a bottle and end up tossing out the rest. It is so smart to have these smaller bottles too. Way to go Owen's!

Now, without further ado, let's get on with it

Here is my official review of their Ginger Beer + Lime mixer:

Owen's Craft Mixer in Ginger Beer + Lime

Four cocktail shakers

Just the mix: The mix alone is basically a virgin Moscow Mule and it is really tasty. The Owen's Ginger Beer + Lime mixer has a great ginger flavor with the kick you'd expect from a ginger beer and just the right amount of lime. It tastes very fresh and very artisan which is why I love this craft cocktail movement!

I think this would be a great option to serve when you have a guest who doesn't drink but you still want to give them a little something special. I would maybe even top it off with lime soda or seltzer for the extra bubbles.

As a cocktail: For the cocktail I made a Southern Mule which was 3 parts mix and 1 part whiskey. I used Makers for this. At first sip I mostly just tasted the whiskey - which is pretty true for all whiskey drinks. But as I continued to sip, more of the ginger flavor came through and the "burn" picked up. All in all, this was a pretty subtle mule and very easy to drink. Two thumbs up.

Sweetness

One cocktail shaker
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This mix was not sweet but it did have just a touch to take the edge off of the citrus and ginger. Owen's used pure cane sugar and you can really tell that it is made with quality ingredients. No fake sugar here!

Booziness

Four cocktail shakers

One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Since this is a mixer you obviously get to choose how boozy you want your drink to be. When made following the recipe this was a pretty boozy cocktail. I definitely got a little daytime buzz going from this drink and I still had one more to go. Let's just say pilates was rough that night!

Here is my official review of Owen's Mint + Cucumber + Lime mixer:

Owen's craft mixer in mint cucumber lime reviewed by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Three cocktail shakers

Just the mix: I really wanted to like this one after enjoying the Ginger Beer + Lime mixer. The mocktail version of this is basically spa water which I love but for some reason this one fell a little flat to me. There was a taste I just couldn't put my finger on. Luckily my friend B had stopped by so I was able to get her opinion on it and she nailed it. This mix has a buttery quality to it.

In this case I liked the mixer straight more than I liked it mixed. I think with some garnish and a splash of sparkling seltzer this could be a very refreshing summer mocktail.

As a cocktail: For the cocktail with this mixer I made Owen's Cucumber Mojito using light rum from Trader Joes. This was a solid cocktail but not my personal favorite, probably because of the cucumber, but you can absolutely taste the quality of this mix. If you love cucumber then you definitely don't want to miss this mix from Owen's.

Sweetness

One cocktail shaker
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This mixer is on par with the previous Owen's mixer. It is not sweet but has a nice rounded flavor so none of the three flavors overpowers the others.

Booziness

Three cocktail shakers

One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

I made the cocktail with this recipe using Owen's guide of 3 parts mixer to 1 part rum. This cocktail didn't come of nearly as strong but that is because my rum was a lower proof than my whiskey.  I also added a bit more mixer to my cocktail part way through which is the fun of mixers.

Would I buy these cocktail mixers again again?

I would like to have a bottle of the Ginger Beer + Lime on hand at all times. It's is a great mixer for easy mules - both virgin and boozy. It would also be perfect to take to parties.

Next week I'll be trying the other two mixers from Owen's - Grapefruit + Lime and Tonic Water + Lime. Make sure to stop by for another Owen's cocktail next Friday!

If you'd like to try these mixers, you can order them online and have them delivered right to your house.

    • I tried the Mint Lime Cucumber a few weeks ago and added a Captain Morgan light rum…delicious! Went back to Walmart this morning to pick up a few more bottles and they are totally out of stock. Trying to order some bottles on line….a testament to how much I loved it!
