Ready-to-drink cocktail review:
Cutwater Spicy Bloody Mary

Bloody mary in a can review of Cutwater Spicy Bloody Mary

Can a canned bloody mary be any good?

If margaritas are my first love then bloody marys are a close second. I even kept a boyfriend around longer than necessary strictly because he made great bloody marys for my roommate and I. He had a special celery salt and everything.

I have been eager to try the Cutwater canned cocktail line for awhile and the spicy bloody mary has been at the top of my list. Having an easy, ready-to-drink bloody mary that you could take anywhere would be a game changer right? Football games, concerts, the standard fall pumpkin patch outing, all the places you don't want to luge a bunch of bottles around. And maybe even more importantly, having a good ready-to-drink bloody mary on hand as a little hair of the dog remedy would be a-mazing.

Good news babes! Cutwater has you covered! I've tried a few pre-made bloody marys in my day and I wasn't impressed so I figured this cocktail was the ultimate test of Cutwater. And I loved it.

This bloody mary is super spicy - they have a mild version if spicy is not your thing. It has a ton of depth to the flavor and doesn't feel pre-made at all to me. I has a good amount of buzz without a strong alcohol taste. It might be too good even. You could totally drink this as tomato juice and then wonder why you were in such a good mood. This cocktail is packed with the good stuff. Look at this close-up of the texture. Can you see the texture and little specks of spice? It is cocktail perfection.

This cocktail also passes my ultimate test - you could definitely pour these cans into glasses and garnish and your friends would have no idea you didn't make them fresh. Which in this case, gives you more time to focus on the "accessories." Add a salted rim, a few olives, maybe some bacon - or go crazy and add a mini grilled cheese sandwich. I have a whole Pinterest board of ideas ready for you.

Here is official my score for the Cutwater Spirit's spicy bloody mary:

Another 5-shaker review!! I promise no one is paying me to say good things about their cocktails. I just really really liked two cocktails in a row, go figure. (If you missed last week's 5-shaker review check it out here.)

I really loved this bloody mary.  There was no flatness, no "canned" taste, no indication that was pre-made. Before trying this cocktail I wondered whether it would be water flavored to be a bloody mary but this totally isn't. It has the tomato texture you'd expect from a bloody mary. It pours out of the can with the thickness you'd expect. And you can see the spices. It is a legit bloody mary.

Sweetness

One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

Bloody mary's are more savory than sweet so the sweetness rating doesn't really apply this week. If it was a savory rating it would be 5-shakers.

Booziness

One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 10% ABV. It is one of the stronger cocktails in the Cutwater line. I thought it was a great amount of booze. It had a subtle boozy kick that is neatly hiding under all the spiciness. I do wonder if the mild version has more noticeable booziness. In the spicy version you could totally miss that it had alcohol until you stood up - always the ultimate test right ladies?

Would I buy this again?

Absolutely! I could totally see myself keeping these on hand at all times.

And I can't wait to get my hands on more of the Cutwater Spirit cocktails. They just came out with a coffee cocktail and I'm dying to try it next.

  • This was delicious! Perfect spice level, and I agree you could totally disguise these and add some garnishes. Great price for what you get. Was craving one the following day even! My only regret is not shaking a bit before opening and the bottom was a bit pulpy.
