Bottled cocktail review:
Van Meer's Brownie Liqueur

Van Meer's Review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Do not judge this "cocktail" by it's bottle

Yes, liqueur isn't *technically* a cocktail on it's own but this blog is all about easy cocktailing which we like to think of as "how can I get a tasty drink in a glass fast?" And since we don't take our cocktails too seriously from a purist, mixology point of view, this one (and maybe others in the future) made the cut.

I was on the hunt for an amazing, dessert-like, holiday cocktail for this week and I saw a display of these kinda ugly bottles with a holiday drink sign above them so I stopped to see what it was all about. I've never heard of Van Meer's, and you know I love a pretty bottle so it was going to take a lot to get me to try this. The one thing it had going for it was that it was brownie flavored. But brownie "imitation liqueur" did not sound so good.

However, upon further inspection I discovered that this is a super sought after line of liqueurs this time of year from The Neatherlands. It was origianlly created in a bakery in the 19th century. Wow. Okay, I can work with that. Additionally, the bottle suggests "serving it on the rocks or pour it over your dessert." And with that, I decided I had to try it.

So here is my official review of the Van Meer's Browne Liqueur:

Three cocktail shakers

This brownie liqueur is a solid choice for a wintery evening, sipping cocktail. It is rich like a dessert and gently warms you up from the inside out while slowly relaxing you. It is not super boozy or super sweet and is little bit like drinking port after dinner. I'm looking forward to sipping my way through the rest of the bottle in the next few weeks. It really is a one glass at a time kind of treat.

I do plan to try the bottle's suggestion of pouring it over my dessert. I have some peppermint ice cream all ready for a taste test. I'll add on update once I get a chance to try them together.

Sweetness

Four cocktail shakers
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

I expected this "cocktail" to be sweeter than it actually is. I was envisioning a super sweet, brownie milkshake type situation so I was a little bummed at first but that is just because I was hoping for over-the-top sweet.

But once I put my preconceived ideas aside, this is a delightfully rich drink with a reasonable about of sweetness for a brownie flavored liqueur.

Booziness

Two cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially the Van Meer's liqueur is 14.9% ABV. While it is not super boozy it does have just enough booze gently melt away your day. I 100% suggest sipping this cocktail during your Netflix and Chill time this winter.

Would I buy these again?

Sure! If I see it again next year during the holiday's I'll think about picking it up again. It is a nice winter nightcap that I'd like to have around to keep me toasty warm and relaxed.
